## Screen resolution vs viewport

Screen resolution is the size of your whole display, while the viewport is the part of the browser window a web page can use. Operating systems scale high-density displays, so a 2880 × 1800 screen may report as 1440 × 900 with a device pixel ratio of 2. Taking screenshots? ScreenBadger saves them at full resolution, with no watermark.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why is my resolution smaller than my monitor’s spec?

Your operating system is scaling the display. Browsers report scaled CSS pixels; multiply by the device pixel ratio to get the physical pixels shown as the headline.

### Does browser zoom change the numbers?

Yes. Zooming changes the device pixel ratio and viewport, so the CSS screen size can change too. Reset zoom to 100% for your true scaling.

### What is colour depth?

The number of bits used for each pixel’s colour. Most displays report 24-bit, which is 8 bits per red, green and blue channel; HDR displays may report 30-bit.

### What does available screen mean?

It is the screen area left after permanent system UI such as the taskbar or Dock.
