The compressed version updates as you move the slider, next to the original, with the new size and percentage saved.

Good to know

How does image compression work?

Lossy formats like JPG and WebP shrink files by discarding detail the eye is unlikely to notice. Quality settings between about 70% and 85% usually cut file size dramatically with little visible change. Screenshots with lots of flat colour and text often compress best as WebP.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What quality should I choose?

Start at 75%. Lower it until you can see blur or blocky edges, then nudge it back up. Photos tolerate lower settings than screenshots with text.

Why is the compressed file bigger?

Images that were already heavily compressed can grow when re-encoded at a high quality. Try a lower quality, a smaller maximum width or the other format.

Does compressing remove transparency?

WebP keeps transparency. JPG does not, so transparent areas are filled with white.

Is there a limit on file size?

There is no fixed limit, but very large images depend on your device’s memory because everything runs locally.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Images are compressed in your browser and never sent to a server.
